This November, I'm growing a Mo to raise much-needed funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Help me change the face of men’s health.
More than 12 million men and boys live in Australia – and, mostly, they live well. Their health is better than in most other countries. They live longer, with the eighth-highest male life expectancy (80.4 years) in the developed world.
Despite this, Australian males face challenges in their health and well-being. They die earlier than women – and more often from diseases that can be prevented.
I am particularly interested in the health of older men, which can be impacted upon by stressful life experiences such as: loss of a partner; major illness; retirement; loss of purpose; financial distress; and social isolation.
Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in males, accounting for one-quarter of cancer diagnoses, with incidence increasing with age.
From 65 to 74 years of age, coronary heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the leading causes of disease burden. After the age of 75, coronary heart disease, dementia and falls are the leading health issues.
